By Chris Bockmann China’s luxury cruise market has exploded in the past few years.
With sales rising to more than a billion yuan ($873 million) a year, cruise operators say they are now the biggest in the world.
But this growth has come at a cost.
Cruise ships are also vulnerable to attacks and theft.
What you need to know about cruise ships in China: • China is on the brink of a cruise ship-related crisis.
The Chinese government is considering imposing new restrictions on the number of cruise ships and banning foreign cruise operators from operating on the country’s coasts.
• Cruise ship operator Shanghai-based Cruise Cruise Lines Ltd said on Monday that it would be “very difficult” to attract new international cruise ships to the country because of the crackdown.
The government has banned the importation of cruise liners into China.
Cruise ship owner Shanghai-listed Cruise Lines Group said in a statement that the “government’s decision to restrict imports has led to a very large number of cancellations and has resulted in a sharp decrease in the number and quality of our cruise ships”.
China has banned foreign cruise ships from the country since 2016.
The ban has been the subject of widespread criticism.
Critics have accused Beijing of trying to stop foreign cruise lines from operating in the country.
The new measures were part of a broader crackdown on foreign cruise operations by authorities to stem a tide of foreign tourism to China, which is growing at an exponential rate.
The crackdown on cruise ships came as Chinese authorities stepped up efforts to prevent the country from falling into a “death spiral”.
In October, China banned foreign tourists from the Chinese mainland and banned Chinese mainland visitors from entering the country on holiday.
China has seen an explosion in cruise ship traffic over the past two years as cruise lines have increased their capacity to carry guests and crew to the mainland.
In the first quarter of 2018, Chinese cruise operators increased their number of vessels by a whopping 1,000 to a record 5,100.
By the end of that period, cruise ships were operating in a territory that covers an area larger than the state of Delaware.
China’s economy grew by 7.9 per cent in the second quarter, the most in nearly four years.
Cruise operators have also seen increased demand in the Asian nation’s booming tourist market.
The United States is one of the biggest cruise destinations in the Middle East, South America and Africa.
A report released last week by the National Travel and Tourism Research Institute said the number one source of demand for luxury cruise ships is the United States, with the Middle Eastern markets the second and African markets third.
China is also the world’s largest cruise passenger market.
Cruise companies have been able to capture a growing share of the market because of their popularity in China and the country has been a haven for luxury travellers.
