When the first few weeks of 2018 were rough, a few people decided they’d try to save some cash and buy a new car for the first times in their lives.
It’s a common tactic for people to try and avoid buying a car, as they’d usually end up paying more than the advertised price and would have to pay an additional premium for the privilege.
But there’s no evidence flexi-gate has actually happened, and it’s not an actual phenomenon.
“The truth is that people don’t have a good reason to buy flexi vehicles in Australia,” says Brett Doolan, director of consumer advice at the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
“There’s no indication of any flexigate happening in the market.”
Flexi-car prices are higher in Australia’s big cities than in the rest of the country, where the average price of a new vehicle is around $26,000.
In Sydney, for example, the average cost of a flexi car is around the $30,000 mark.
But the difference is a lot smaller in Brisbane, where average car prices hover around $25,000, and Perth, where they’re around $19,000 in a city with a population of just over 3 million.
The biggest difference between Australian and global flexi markets comes from Sydney and Melbourne, where prices are typically closer to $25 per kilometre.
“If you are in Sydney, then you’re basically paying around $20 per kilometer in a Sydney-only market,” says Doolin.
But that price difference can change depending on where you live.
“In Melbourne you can buy a car for $20 less than a car that you buy in Sydney for $50,” he says.
“So if you are just buying a flex car in Sydney you can get it for around $60 a kilometre or less.”
That’s why it’s important to be aware of your local market, and to look at what you can expect to pay for your vehicle in each city.
If you’re a newbie to the market, you might be able to get a great deal, but if you’ve been in the industry for a while, you may be stuck in the $25 to $40 range.
Doolen says it’s worth taking a look at how much you’re paying for a new set of wheels, brakes and tyres in each market.
“It’s a good idea to look for the most comparable prices that you can find on the internet for your chosen vehicle,” he said.

In Melbourne, you can usually find a $20 car for around half the cost of the cheapest vehicle in Brisbane.
In Perth, you’ll usually be able buy a $10 car for about half the price of the most expensive in Sydney.
And in Brisbane you can probably get a $5 car for half the budget of a $60 car in Melbourne.
Dooley says there’s a way to avoid flexi cars in your local area, but that’s more difficult to do than finding the best deal online.
“You’ll need to have a certain level of knowledge of the local market and the specific vehicles that are available in each area,” he explains.
“I think you’ll have to find the best deals and buy your vehicle on the cheap.”
